On August 15th, just a couple weeks after launching their latest mode (V 6.1), Midjourney released a new update that allows users to edit specific aspects of an image they’ve created.

This feature adds an entirely new element to creating AI-generated images and allows creators to be more specific with what they want to make. Here’s how it works:

1. Access the Midjourney Website

Head over to Midjourney’s website and either start a subscription or use the free trial. The free trial allows you to create up to 25 images for free. The paid subscription will run you between $8-$10 a month, depending on if you pay annually or monthly.

2. Type in your prompt in the “imagine” bar

Simply type a description of the kind of image you’d like to create. If you’d like to learn the basics of Midjourney prompts, you can check out their best practices here. For the prompt in this example, I gave it this description: A cartoon blue bird is holding a magnifying glass and sitting on a nest made of blue, red, yellow and green twigs

Press enter, and Midjourney will generate 4 versions of the image you described.

3. Once the images are generated, select the image you want to edit

Pick the image you like best or whichever one you want to further edit. On the bottom right, there will be a button labeled “Editor.”

5. Brush over the area you want to edit directly on the image

When you hover over the image in the editor, your cursor will turn into a circle brush tool. Click and hold over the entire area you want to edit. Once you’ve covered the image, click the “Submit” button on the bottom right.

6. Close the editor and see your changes come to life!

And voila! You’re now able to edit specific elements of an image by simply describing what you want to change and selecting the area you want changed. To download, just click the image you want to save and there will be a download button on the top right.

This seemingly simple update opens up a world of opportunity for creators.
